Description: Growing up in an isolated village can make a young person yearn for more cultural experience. The original series "Escaping Alaska" follows the journeys of Mary, Frank, Tamara, Qituvituag (aka "Q") and Nuala as they leave their sheltered communities and move to San Diego. They lie about their reasons, because telling their families they want independence and a new way of life would be seen as betrayal of their Inuit, Inupiaq or Yupik upbringings. Outside their comfort zone, the cast members struggle with dating, finding jobs, and other pressure-filled situations, but if they should decide to return home, they may not be welcomed back.
