The series, narrated by Olivia Colman, tells stories of soldiers, and the wives and girlfriends they left behind, whose words - as written in diaries and letters - are spoken by actors who portray them. The stories, sourced from libraries and archives across Britain, convey the hopes, fears, heroic acts and tragedies of the British people of the time.
